The Los Angeles Rams will take on the San Francisco 49ers in Week One of the 2026 NFL Season at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), in what will be the first ever National Football League (NFL) game in Australia. The game will officially take place on Friday, September 11th, at 10:30am local time, which is 5:35pm PT on Thursday, September 10th, in L.A. and San Francisco. The NFL’s first international regular season game came in 2005 in Mexico City with a matchup between the 49ers and another NFC West rival, the Arizona Cardinals. Not long after, the international series for the NFL officially began in 2007 in London with a game between the Miami Dolphins and the eventual Super Bowl champions that season, the New York Giants. Since then, the NFL has seen over 50 regular season games take part on foreign soil. Now, the league is taking its biggest step yet on the international stage, as the biggest sports league in the USA will head down under to stage their biggest international game yet. So with over half a century of other international games already in the books, what makes the MCG’s upcoming game the biggest of them all?
Firstly, this is a huge matchup in the NFL regular season. The Rams and 49ers both won 12 games last year, and were both eliminated in the playoffs by the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks, with the Rams taking them down to the wire. These are two teams who will be hoping to compete into late January and one of them may well still be around in February for Super Bowl LXI. A criticism often associated with the international series has been that throwaway games are given to matchups overseas, but this one is far from it. A divisional rival matchup between two playoff teams last year, which could very well have large postseason ramifications this season, Melbourne has been given a huge game for their NFL debut. Along with that, the NFL has made this game a huge priority, so much so that the Super Bowl champions will open the year on a Wednesday to accommodate the Melbourne game, making this season the first one to open on a Wednesday since 2012. The official matchups for the other international games in London, Mexico City, Rio, Madrid, Munich and Paris are yet to be announced, but it is hard to see them topping this game where two of the best teams in the league will face off to open their seasons. With this game also being at the MCG, one of the most iconic sports stadiums in the world with its capacity of 100,000, Melbourne’s time in the spotlight is clearly a priority for the NFL’s commissioner Roger Goodell.
But big games have happened before on the international stage. Week One last season saw the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil in a divisional matchup between two teams who most thought would be fighting for the playoffs, with the Chiefs having made the previous three Super Bowls. However, what makes this game extra special is that it is a massive step into a new market for the NFL. The league has had plenty of games across Europe and the Americas. Now, it steps into Australia, one of the most sports-crazy countries in the world. They produce top athletes in their main sports league, the AFL, and have also developed world-class international talent in Cricket, Rugby League and Rugby Union, with their soccer team also qualifying for the last five World Cups. The country has also produced multiple Super Bowl champions, with the Seahawks’ punter Michael Dickson winning Super Bowl LX, a year after Jordan Mailata, the Philadelphia Eagles’ star left tackle, lifted the Lombardi trophy. A game in Australia has the potential to inspire a new generation of talented Australian athletes to pursue American Football, giving the NFL a huge opportunity to develop more international talent, and give the game a commanding voice in a nation that thrives on other highly physical sports such as AFL, Rugby League and Rugby Union.
The Asia-Pacific market is yet to be explored by the league properly. There was the American Bowl series, but that stopped in 2005 in Tokyo and since then Asia hasn’t seen an NFL game. Of course, Australia isn’t in Asia, but the markets can be approached in a similar manner given the time-zones. With Melbourne being just two hours ahead of Japan’s time-zone for the majority of the NFL season, and only one hour ahead for the first month, a game with high viewership down under in Melbourne will draw similar viewership to a potential future game in Tokyo. Goodell has already confirmed that after Australia, Asia is the next target for the NFL. Australia can bridge the gap between the NFL and the biggest continent on earth with their game in Melbourne, and that is Goodell’s target. With expansion into Australia and Asia, the NFL will have made their presence known first-hand in almost every region across the globe, exploring the biggest markets on earth. The game in Melbourne is what will take this league to the next level in terms of global appeal. Sports fans in Australia and Asia are already in love with the Premier League, soccer’s most popular domestic league, as well as other major leagues in Europe. Now, the NFL wants its turn in the spotlight and going through Melbourne, arguably the biggest sports city in the world, is the way to do that.
The Rams and 49ers will be focused on what they need to do to win in Melbourne and start 1-0 in the 2026 season. But while this is a huge regular season matchup for two divisional rivals, it is an even bigger game off the field. The NFL has been going international for a long time, but September’s game in Melbourne will be what finally makes it a true global league.
